Hi guys,
I'm trying to improve my ranking on google for my website and I am wondering whether it is the matatag stuff that is letting me down. I'm not 100% on how it all works. I was just hoping someone on here would be able to help me with what I need to do. I'll show you an example below on my Mother' Day Category and see if you think I am doing it right and if not, what I do need to do. Thanks x
Title Tag: Personalised Signs: Personalised Mother's Day Gifts
Metatag Description: Personalised Mother's Day Gifts: handmade, personalised Mother's Day gifts. Personalise with your own text to make the gift extra special. Wooden plaques, signs and gifts.
Words like 'cheap, heart, sign, special' etc are completely pointless as keywords as they are treated individually, not combined with any other keyword phase that you have used.
That said, it is claimed that Google now pays very little attention to keywords any more.

Absolutely true, metatags are more for you and customer, the only title is important.
Google has never indexed the keywords meta tag, however Yahoo and Bing both take them into account so it is still worthwhile optimising them.
However there doesn't seem to be anything badly wrong with your meta tags, so I would suggest creating links to help increase SERPs, have a look at my signature for services we offer which all have a positive facto in SERPs

I would recommend using a complete sentence in your meta description, including your keywords, when relevant - as opposed to a listing of keyords separated with commas.
Also, you should be aware of the character restrictions to meta descriptions (keep it below 165 including spaces - yours is 170), so that your text isn't cut when it appears in search results.
I recommend reading this article on Copbyblogger (which I'm not associated with, by the way, just a fan) copyblogger com/on-page-seo/ which covers some pretty useful SEO stuff.
I would with ILilja and make the meta description a complete sentence and useful to your customer. Just try and drop your keywords in there in a clever way. Also a call to action is always good, such as: Buy online today
Just remember each page of a website can be optimized ideally for one key word. We have a client who ranks on the first page of google when competition is high and there is 30k searches a month.
You need to optimise each page and need backlinks. Not 100,000 any old links they need to be high page ranking. I settle for nothing less than a page rank of 5 when I look for do follow backlinks overwise it is worth only a fiver as it will do more harm than good.

CHANGE THIS TO: We offer bespoke signs to order for your corporate boardroom to your childrens bedroom starting from £3.50
The keywords do not really matter in my eyes as google ignores them and that is where most traffic is from.
Change shop title from Personalised Gifts, Signs & Plaques
to signs to order
and in the description place just one sentence in about signs to order.
Just doing this you will be on google front page in 1/2 weeks like I say traffic for that keyword is 1900 a month but please tidy up the banner. Any more advice is on a paid for basis now Im afraid other peeps to help out.
Are you promoting your website for the keywords "Personalised Signs" and " Personalised Mother's Day Gifts" ? Using "|" to seperate keywords instead of ":" though it is not going to make any difference.
It is better use a sentence with keywords in meta description rather than just using a set of keywords.
