The most important keywords should appear at the beginning
Only the first 65 or so characters are displayed by Google, though the full title is read and stored.
It should read like a newspaper headline, rather than just being a long list of keywords (though I think Earl has a different view on this). It should entice a potential visitor to click on it on the Google results page.
thats not true.
google will read around 9 words and will display different length of title depending on what it thinks is long enough but normally they are all around the same size.
It also is not given fact that putting the most important words at the start of a title makes g think that that is the most important bit of the title.
I know a little about SEO. Type website designer into G and im 11th. I do SEO for a living... plus wedding photography and a couple of other things but just now website design is my day to day 9-5 (which includes 85% SEO - 15% design)
The most important keywords should be used early as only the first 65 are displayed on Google?
I might be missing the point here.
Google lists you by your keywords..but it displays the Meta Description if you have one. I haven't been re-indexed yet but...

what a great thread... however... many differing views <sigh>.
i am totally new to SEO and i dont design sites, just trying to optimise the one.
the more i try, the more i stumble, the more i read, the more confused i get!!
the whole keyword thing does my head in!
i have messed with my <title> and <description> as our designer just used our company name throughout for title and our tag line + company name for description, which, as i understand isnt gonna do so well unless you look specifically for our company name?
reading the OP, i see talk of H1 tags. in the content of my site, i dont think H1 appears anywhere, only in the header, and again thats the title/ name of the log (i.e. company name and strap). being in the header, does that have the same effect as being in the content? and seeing as its "hidden" can i be more descriptive in there?
thanks
p.s. i am so happy i found you guys... you're all most helpful and friendly... wish i could reciprocate

What is your website address and I will see what is going on for you!
Actually, google will display your meta for the description, as RandomTemplate stated, google pulls out the first 200 words as a minimum for Keyword, density etc! How can a formula so common and so widespread be so *******ised in one thread, it is only a formula, follow it, and good things happen. But where this 65 came from I have no idea, I will put something up when I have access to the main mac over the weekend, all my tools are on that, and will put up some fact and lose the fiction!
