It’s a very simple argument that any society must face…cost vs income.
I really don’t like the focus of this article, that by legislating flyering you’re killing off small bands / the arts … it’s simply not true. Gone are the days where the streets of London were paved with gold and one could make money anywhere. We live in a society where one must pay for their wake. It is true that Leaflets contribute to litter. It is also true that Leaflets generate SIGNIFICANT income for those that get it right. So why not charge for their disposal? Sure, some will see it as another tax, and in a way, it is, but it’s only like the charges applied to fast food places for litter collection.
Stop leaflets?
It is true that commerce today is bombarded by advertising options. I can’t speak for those of which I have no knowledge, but I can speak for my industry, and let me tell you, Flyers are not a thing of the past, they work very well today. What shocks me most, is that I do very little work for the entertainment industry, more of my work comes in from companies who would never have dreamed of such a “low down common form of marketing” such as leaflets – Windfarm executives, Agricultural Inventors and Private Therapists to name but a few…but in these pound pressing times, they make my phone ring.
What’s more exciting, is when they phone me back like gleeful children “I’ve just had 3 new clients from the XX drop!!! What should we do next?”… or I return from holiday to find a large firm of estate agents has placed an order from every one of it’s offices… Why? Because for a small amount of money, they can sell, sell, sell!
Truth: Companies don’t waste money
If they didn’t work, companies wouldn’t use them, that’s just simple business…so let’s just get past this myth that leaflets are old fashioned and that smart phones are better at generating income. I have an iphone and a blackberry, I receive very little advertising, when compared to say the post I receive at home where I’m bombarded with marketing materials.Have I brought anything from smart phone advertising in the last year? Nope. Have I brought anything from Leaflets through my door? Yes, Pizza and Chinese food mostly.
It works.
Will it always work? Who knows. We thought we’d have myspace forever, now it’s all but dead, and we thought we’d be living on the moon by now, but we haven’t been there for 30 years. Time will tell, it will be consumers that drive it. While consumers still spend their cash with companies who promote with their leaflets, they’ll thrive.

Thanks for bringing that to our attention
Disgraceful.
That licence is Just another tax on ordinary people going about lawful business.
If these wasters of local government civil servant who thought of it , had to promote themselves to get hired and paid, they would have a whole different take on it.
But they dont - we pay them anyway - to waste more taxpayers money on producing this nanny state.
Sack them all, from town hall chief down!
That said - there are some LAMENTABLE flyers that come throuygh my door....So I cannot think they help the organisations involved.

Good response , but i must correct you slightly ..
The reason we have never sent Nasa back is when they arrived they was told to naff off back to earth by the aliens who live there .. likewise Mars its taken and we are only residents on earth by the way !! if we dont keep paying the rent they will be kicking our arses off and i think the Yanks have defaulted so watch the skys as i do ...
That came from my research on my "Knowing somethings wrong and i must save the world " researching of days and weeks of time finding and researching information ..
1. I use leaflets for each of my businesses, and yes, they do produce results.
2. The government wishes to control every tiny detail of our worlds. For 25 years now, the encroaching control freakery legislation creeps relentlessly on, with the result that we now have so many rules we are all unintentional criminals. This seems to be a suggestion that we need another set of rules. We do not.
