Default Pension age workers on the rise

Double the number of people aged 65 and over are working in the UK compared with a decade ago, official statistics show.

A growing number of older people are working either full-time or part-time and make up a rising proportion of the total UK workforce.

The trend is revealed in the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) data on older workers at the end of 2010.

Youth unemployment was at a record high during the same period.

"How else would I get to touch young women!"

Omg this is a pretty useless bit of information.

They screw with the pension so people need to work longer, then its a huge news story when they do. Theres X number of jobs, will they go to the A) People with 30+ years of experience or B) The people with zero work experience.

It's not some miracle that people are working later into there life and struggling to find it early on. Its called f'ing math.

Indeed. For years the government have wanted more older folks to be at work. So the policy is working

Good point, just the other day I was minding my own business going to get some milk from the shop, some woman in one of those little remote control car thingies nearly took my damn arm off!

We are told that people do not want to retire, and that it is discriminatory. Then we see crowds of old ladies getting the raving hump because they have to work to 66 now. Or something.

So who is right?

Truth is, the abandonment of the retirement age has zero to do with discrimination, and everything to do with financial reality. Which is how it should be. Because it is a financial reality.

Totally. More and more people are living longer, so something has to give.

Couple hundred years ago, half the people posting on this forum would of died of old age by now. We all want to live forever, increasingly we are!

Or like soo many years ago... your born, you get educated (if your lucky) you work, you die. Cut the retirement bs and problem solved. They'd prolly die quicker too and free up jobs for the newly educated. No more of this being nice crap, you worked as a labourer for 40years? Fine no cushy office job til u retire, get ur ass back down there and break the rocks!
