Default Best font to use for a site.

Just getting peoples thoughts on this one:

What do people currently use? and what do you think is the best one for a site to use?

I normally use Verdana as my first preference with Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica and sans-serif following on the stylesheet so most people will be covered.

I am guilty of being a font fidler , I tend to go through every font at my disposal trying to decide which looks just right.

But you also need to bare in mind that some people may have far less font choices than you do, so you need to set the parameters of what a font converts to (to the more usual ones) if they are unable to view your choice.

I did a bit of research into this, and for general site text (ie not headers) the unanimous verdict was one of the standard ones like Verdana/Arial.

Apparently fonts like Times New Roman are for printed material and shouldn't be viewed on a screen (I'm a numbers bloke, don't ask me!).

If you've got a web designer you're working with, I recommend you ask them their thoughts on Comic Sans. Tell them you really like it and I'm sure they'll be well impressed

I pretty much go with whatever suits but there is a nice little tool out there. Even tells you what os/browsers have it.

Typetester – Compare fonts for the screen
