Default What makes a perfect job?

So what makes a perfect job for you?

Is it the job itself, the money, the people or the benefits, or something else entirely.

I guess with my new job, I am still training but finding myself bored, even when I was in the call centre on friday and taking aclls, I was just bored.

It is good money and decent hours (Short shifts) But I sat there thinking how bored I was and how there must be something out there to catch my attention. I am not saying i am leaving as it's money and that will enable me to do things with my businessess.

But is it because I have LBC and Web Angel and want to spend all my time on those projects and to make them successful, that I am finding my normal day job boring?

I don't mean to sound smug but the job I have now is my ideal job.

Prior to working for John, as some of you will know, I worked in the NHS and yes the money was pretty good but I hated it. I lived for the weekends and my annual leave.

John and I are in the fortunate position where we can pretty much mix work with life in a very fluid way. So, while I might on occasions work through the night (usually because I'm suffering insomnia and sometimes because work needs it). But similarly once in a while we can suddenly decide we're nipping out for a drive because it's a lovely day. (With business booming as it has for the last couple of years that happens less now but in theory we could!)

People sometimes say to me 'are you still working' or 'you're working on a bank holiday??' but it just doesn't feel like 'work' as I used to know it. I love messing around with computers - I've always said I'm definitely a geeky girl :P

So, I get to do something I love and have a high degree of flexibility - I get the job done and I'm a perfectionist but for me, it's the feeling of being in control, to quite a high degree of what I do when, as long as I achieve the overall tasks/goals.

The funny thing is.... Cath had to beg me to let her work for me. Not because I didn't have faith in her skills, I just didn't want our relationship compromised by becoming her boss. In fact after Cath had finally convinced me, we agreed she would briefly oversee one of my companies before moving to a new area, but the job became so involved that she is still running the project very successfully many years on.

For me I have never known anything else really...running companies has been my life...it can be the best job in the world and sometimes feel like the worst. I doubt I would make a very good employee after all these years and as Cath says it is great to be able to (theortically) do what we like, when we like!

I agree with almost every word that Cathy says. I could hardly have written it any better myself.

Nicole, it is hard to read your situation. You might find that as you learn more about the business, you start to find it more interesting. I suspect though that as time goes on you will find your job less and less satisfying. You might be one of those natural business people, who feel trapped and bored working in someone else's business when you want to be developing your own (I'm the same).
