Default Sky

Why do Sky insist you are connected to a phone line for the first year of your contract. What do they get out of it from a business perspective?

nowt, its supposed to be for updates, also used for some interactive services. i pulled mine out the day after the install and it hasnt seen a line since, that was about 10 years ago.

ive upgraded to sky plus since too, did it myself so they didnt ask for a line to be connected.

Andy.

It cant just be for updates....why do they go to such lengths to stress in their terms and conditions and on every bit of sales lit you see, you MUST keep it connected, is that really for your benefit so they can make sure you are upto date with your firmware? Doubt it

Besides mine has actually never been connected and i still receive updates?

I had a company selling Sky for many years and the terms for being an official dealer were very strict. When they first brought out the system that had to be connected to the phone line, they ran a check to ensure that it was connected before they would pay out the commission.

At the time there was a lot of rumour that Sky was doing this to in some way monitor the number of calls made to allow them to target high phone users when BT started unbundling the exchanges to set up their own rival telecoms company (like TalkTalk) and to set up it's ISP.

Updates are done over the satellite transmission not over the phone line, as i updated two boxes only a couple of weeks back.

i know the phone line has to be connected for certain services like interactive where it costs you phone call money for the service.

not sure how or even if they enforce it, but it isnt that strict as it would be very easy for them to make the boxes not work if the phone line is dissed, but they dont and ive never had a problem with no line connected in atleast 10 years with them.

Andy.

Perhaps it's easier to sell Box office, as an impulse purchase? You have to collect a line for that I think .

Now I had a sky box and the telephone line wouldn't reach without lifting up the carpet, and during that period I ordered No box office movies

I was told by my engineer it is for pay purchases suh as box office and interactive. they hope you will use it and try to force you by contracting you to plug the line in.
