Default Steve Jobs the Greatest Entrepreneur Ever?

As Steve Jobs stands down as CEO of Apple due to health grounds, it is being asked if he is (was) the best industrialist of all time?

Jobs had just seen a 9000% growth in Apple's share price since his return that saw Apple become the World's largest company.

I have never owned an Apple product in my life, but was amazed by them at Cambridge University when I was working on a project in the early 90's .

Jobs was booted out of Apple the company he founded in the 70's after sales of the zero to $1.5bn company stalled a year after the launch of the Mac.

And there it so nearly ended. Apple became a metoo computer maker and software provider in stall. Microsoft and IBM left the company standing and there collaboration made them the defacto standards of the industry.

Steve Jobs was left lost and isolated when he was thrown out of his own company and it is said he was desolate. Yet somehow he used the space to buy a small animation company from Lucasfilm (the creator of Starwars) and turn it into a $7.6bn film producer Pixar, which he ultimately sold to Disney, making Jobs the biggest shareholder in Walt Disney.

And a new computer company called "Next"!

When a failing computer company called Apple went looking for a takeover that would get them back on track, they choose one company, purely because they needed that's companies technology. And so Next was taken over by Apple. And Steve Jobs found his young company now part of his old and was raised back up to CEO of his original business.

Being dismissed from Apple, the company he first created had hardened him up, and so he wasted no time when let back. Jobs, quickly removed loss selling products and rebuilt the basics.

Jobs has reformed the computer, music, mobile phone and software industries and created the worlds largest company. His illness have hampered him, but no one has possibly ever made such a huge impact on world industry ever!

I don't know... would you credit him, or his marketing team? Or perhaps his accountants? When we surround ourselves with good people, it's fertile ground for good things to happen. I don't think he's really invented anything, I think he's just evolved things and surrounded them with incredible marketing.

I had a solid state MP3 player in 2001, it was 256mb, it had a recorder in it too, a small display, and it was pretty cool - the iPod was just better. Likewise, their machines aren't any better than say a Dell or a HP - but they get every ounce of power from the selected components, because they don't just sling things together and hope they work. Evolution.

Winamp organised my music long before iTunes was around (it really kicked the lamas ass!) and Napster was my download point for albums. iTunes is just an evolution.

For me, I think he made good products, but his power wasn't in product creation, it was in marketing.

An entrepreneur plays to their strengths and knows when to bring others in to cover their weaknesses.
