Part P is a section of building regulations for England and Wales that cover a very specific topic - electricity.

Part P electrical regulations were put together with one goal in mind - to stop people being killed by unsafe electrical systems that fail health and safety. There are around 13,000 fires caused every year by electrical systems, both domestic and commercial, that fault due to being inferior.

Part P was first introduced on January the 1st 2005. It requires that all the relevant electrical works carried out in England and Wales be done so to building regulations. The relevant works being most works as very little to do with electrical installation requires no building regulation paper work at this moment in time.

The Part P scheme requires that any electrician looking to do electrical work that requires building regulation certs join one of the many competent persons schemes. Any electrician that undertakes electrical work that requires building certification and isn't a member of a competent persons scheme to prove that they understand the new regulations can be fined up to £5,000 pounds.
